'Shogun' Rua off UFC 85 card after injuring his knee

March 4th, 2008, 3:52 pm · 1 Comment · posted by CARLOS ARIAS

Mauricio “Shogun” RuaMauricio "Shogun" Rua was scheduled to face former UFC light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell at UFC 85 on June 7 at O2 Arena in London, England, but he was forced to pull out of the fight after re-injuring his left knee, the UFC announced on its Web site.

Rua ruptured the ACL on his left knee, the same injury he had surgery to repair last October after his bout against Forrest Griffin at UFC 76.

Rua was hoping to get back in the win column after getting submitted by Griffin in the third round of his UFC debut on Sept. 22 at Honda Center.

"I've never seen Shogun so motivated for a fight like this in years," Rua's spokesman Eduardo Alonso said. "This was like a new beginning for him."

The UFC is expected to announce Rua's replacement shortly.
