Keep Punching ~ Carlos Arias goes toe-to-toe with all the heavyweights in MMA and boxing for the O.C. Register

D.C. is back at ringside for Mosley-Mayorga

September 28th, 2008, 12:39 am · Post a Comment · posted by CARLOS ARIAS

NOTE: Damian Calhoun, a.k.a. D.C. the guest blogger, is back to give the Keep Punching blog his take on the Sugar Shane Mosley-Ricardo Mayorga fight card on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. Check out how the night turned out for D.C.

I'm baaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!

After a three month hiatus and a bit of confusion at the credential will call (My name is Damian Calhoun and not Calhoun Damian, what a clown) I have finally found my way back home to The Home Depot Center. I used to cover the Galaxy for 4 ½ years, but…..well, let's not get into specifics.

Anyway, I'm at the HDC with boxing guru Carlos Arias in preparation for the Shane Mosley-Ricardo Mayorga and the Andre Berto-Steve Forbes co-feature.

If anybody drops, quits or cries, I will bring it to you live and in color. First of all, I have to find Harold Lederman.

Where's the love for Luis Collazo?

The guy is ranked No. 1in the WBC and WBA, but he's fighting at 4 p.m. What gives? In wrestling circles, today he's one of the curtain jerkers. That's amazing. By the way, Collazo (29-3) pounded Russell “Don't call me Michael” Jordan, stopping him in the eighth round.

Is Brooklyn in the house?

At least Daniel Jacobs is. He's a young and upcoming prospect in the Middleweight Division. Emmanuel Gonzalez is a brave soul. He's gone down twice inside of four rounds. He rallied strong in the fourth round.

Soccer or Boxing?

There are two events tonight at the HDC. This fight card is in the tennis stadium and a Chivas USA-Kansas City soccer game is in the main stadium. I wonder which event will draw the most fans. My money is on the fight. I have a hunch.

Marcy, son.

I don't know if Jacobs is from the same Marcy Projects as Jay-Z, but he just wrapped up the victory with a unanimous decision. Brooklyn is definitely in the house.

They still fight in the heavyweight division?

Are you serious? Next up, is Ray Austin against Dominic Jenkins. Austin is in at 247 pounds, while Jenkins is in at 216. Jenkins needs to eat if he's going to survive in this weight class or at least go eating with Austin.

The action started out good in the first round as Jenkins uncorked a left hook to Austin's head. Things slowed down after that and the fans responded with a chorus of boos.

Are they still in the ring?

I started crowd surfing to see which celebs are entering, but to my dismay, when I turned my attention back to the ring, Austin and Jenkins were still there. Paul Williams is in the house. I was here when he beat Antonio Margarito. He's cool. He just knocked out Andy Kolle Thursday. Or was that earlier today.

They're still fighting and Paul Williams is still signing

Williams must really love his fans, because he's been signing autographs, taking pictures and shaking hands for about 10 minutes now. AND THE LINE IS GETTING LONGER BY THE SECOND. By the way, the Austin-Jenkins fight finally ended with Austin winning by unanimous decision. I couldn't disagree if I wanted to, since I've only watched one round.

How far can you stretch a $10 food voucher?

Here at the HDC, that sucka doesn't go very far. Try a hot dog and a bag of popcorn. Meanwhile, Craig McEwan won a unanimous decision over Hilario Lopez whose performance was hilarious at best….I couldn't resist.

Now the waiting game has began

HBO is set to begin the televised portion of tonight's event at 7:30. It is now 7:15 p.m. Jim Lampley is walking around. Al Bernstein is in the building. Larry Merchant has his shades on and Michael Buffer is here as well…The crew is here, let's start this show.

HBO portion of the night

First up is the co-feature of the evening: Andre Berto and Steve Forbes of The Contender fame. Forbes handled himself well against Oscar De La Hoya earlier this year, so this will not be an easy fight for Berto.

I've just witnessed the meeting of the ring announcers. The guy announced the undercard fights just shook hands with Michael Buffer. Game recognizes game, that's the code of the streets.

HBO is finally on the air. I'm guessing the fans are not in a rush to show up or maybe they're all at the soccer game. The tennis stadium holds 8,000, but it is more than half full. (Final attendance count: 5,798)

7:37 p.m.

Antonio Margarito just walked into the building with his smart glasses on (as Carlos described them. I have a pair of smart glass too) and the fans are giving him a standing ovation. Now that's respect.

7:40 p.m.

Finally, 30 minutes after the national anthem, here comes Steve “Two Pound” Forbes. Berto is in the ring now. Buffer has the intros, let's start the show. This is for the WBC Welterweight championship. Forbes is making the least out of the four feature fighters. I think he's being paid two biscuits and a jawbreaker. That should make him hungry. I'm starving.

7:50 p.m.

Andre Berto-Steve Forbes

Round 1

Forbes is here to fight. Carlos thinks that Berto won the round. He controlled the first half, but Forbes flurried at the end. I'll give it to Berto

Round 2

Good back and forth action. I just received a text from my brother and he said that the ref (James Jen Kin looks like Judge Ito from the O.J. Simpson trial). He's watching the fight from his estate in Compton. Round 2 to Forbes…I think.

Round 3

Goes to Berto. He's landing the clean, effective punches. Forbes is cut over his left eye.

Round 4

It appears that cut over Forbes' left eye came from a head butt. Berto was incensed before the round because we think that the ref told him that the cut was from a head butt. Berto tried to open up another cut with his punches winning the round on my scorecard (which is a napkin).

Round 5

My brother said that the HBO crew said that the ruling is an accidental head butt. Whatever the ruling, Berto just pocketed another round. We have two ring card girls. One is definitely on her “A” game. The other is sleepwalking.

Carlos thinks we're dead even after six. I think Berto is winning 4 rounds to 2.

Round 7

Even Carlos couldn't dispute Berto's dominance in that round. He might have trouble on the inside, but other than that, he's running things. Forbes is starting to get taxed.

Round 8

Berto knocked out Forbes' mouthpiece with an uppercut. The breakdown of Steve Forbes is well underway.

Apparently not everyone is impressed with Berto. My brother said that Larry Merchant just told the TV audience that Forbes is blocking Berto's punches. Well, from ringside, it appears that Forbes is blocking them with his face and ribs.

Let's skip to the 12th and final round

The 11th round was difficult to score. One of Forbes' corner guys told him to let his hands go (I.E. throw punches). There's the bell. I have Berto winning. Nobody can knock out Steve Forbes.

Still undefeated, still champ…Andre Berto wins by unanimous decision: 118-109, 118-109, 116-111. He is that dude. Tell a friend. Berto improves to 23-0 Forbes falls to 33-7 and 0-2 in Carson.

Back to the head butt, Berto did have a point deducted. However, it really didn't matter.

8:41 p.m.

Post, post fight

Steve Forbes announced that he's going back down to 140. His manager said he will take on anybody at lightweight (135) or super lightweight (140). I'm not sure if anybody wants to fight him, he's tough, extremely tough. He can take a punch. Berto said that he's going to take a break and he will be back early in 2009. He has everything in front of him…Don't miss out. A fan wants him to fight Luis Collazo. I love these outdoor press conferences.

Main event

Mayorga-Mosley

Mayorga is a boxing pimp. He continues to make that money because all of his fights are entertaining. I'm sure this will be as well. He can thrill on occasion, but he gets pounded regularly. I guess Mosley is a millionaire (why else would he choose Lil Wayne's A Milli, A Milli song. Maybe he's just a fan.)

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!!!!!!!!

Mayorga weighed in at 153, but word on the street he's up to 170.

Mayorga is sizing up for the one-hitter quitter. This is going to be a tough fight to score. Mayorga just stood up on the ropes after the first round.

There is always a point in a Mayorga fight when he drops his hands and allows his opponent to get in free shots. I'm waiting for that moment. In the meantime, he's landing some wild hooks.

Round 3

Mayorga is throwing everything and from every angle. It isn't pretty, in fact it is rather ugly, but Mayorga has won the first three rounds.

Round 4

Anything straight and down the middle should work for Mosley, especially with Mayorga winding up and throwing from left field. Mosley might have won the fourth.

Round 5

Order is slowly being restored as Mosley is getting his punches off.

Round 6

We're all even through six. (I typed that after the first minute of the round). Right. Left. Right. Left …Shane is ruthless right now.

Round 7

It's jab time for Mosley. He should have won that round on the judges' scorecard for a 4-3 lead.

Round 8

Mosley is now slipping all of Mayorga's punches. However, Mayorga continues to raise his hand to the crowd, but the crowd isn't buying that.

Round 9

Tough round to score and that's why I'm glad I don't have to. But Mayorga might have done just enough to sneak out victory in that round.

Round 10

If you thought round 9 was difficult to score, try round 10.

Round 12

Carlos has Mosley up by two points heading into the final round. I stopped trying to keep score several rounds ago.

With one second left in the 12th

Mayorga is on his back.

FLASH …

I don't think we're going to need those scorecards. Mosley dropped Mayorga and then finished him off with one second left on the clock. That's how he rolls.

Shane really, really, really needed that knockout. After 11 rounds, Judge Nelson Vasquez had Mosley up by one point, Judge Tony Crebs had Mosley up by five points and Judge Pat Russell had Mayorga up by one.

I'm not sure where all of that came from, but I think I felt it. I know that Mayorga certainly felt it. I'm going home to watch this again and again and again and again.
