RING NOTES: Nothing personal for Pac-Man

December 3rd, 2008, 10:10 pm · Post a Comment · posted by CARLOS ARIAS

Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, have fired off some serious verbal shots at each other in recent weeks leading up to De La Hoya's superfight against Pacquiao on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on HBO PPV.

Pacquiao has stayed out of the verbal squabble between De La Hoya and Roach.

“I don't have a comment about that,” Pacquiao said. “I'm out of that and that's between my trainer and Oscar. I'm just focused on my training.”

De La Hoya actually brought Roach in to be his trainer when he took on Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2007. De La Hoya lost a unanimous decision to Mayweather and he ended up blaming the loss on a poor game plan by Roach.

“Well, for me, I never blame my trainer in my boxing career - I never blame my trainer if I lose,” Pacquiao said. “I'm just blaming myself because in training, you know what you're doing. You can suggest to your trainer that we're going to do this, do that because this is his style and I think this is good for the fight. I don't think you need to blame your trainer.”

Mexican champions such as Antonio Margarito, Julio Cesar Chavez and Erik Morales have been vocal in their support for Pacquiao. De La Hoya has Ruben Olivares, Pipino Cuevas, Chiquita Gonzalez and Finito Lopez on his side.

“Well, thank you to all the people who believe in me, rooting for me, especially Filipino and Mexican and American - all the people who love boxing,” Pacquiao said. “For me it's nothing personal - I'm just doing my job in the ring.

MEXICAN REVENGE

Pacquiao made his mark by toppling the top Mexican fighters of this era such as Marco Antonio Barrera, Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez.

“Manny Pacquiao has beaten up on all these Mexicans and this (Saturday) is the day this is going to stop,” Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told the Manila Bulletin. “This is the day the Mexicans get their revenge.”
