Super Six World Boxing Classic returns Saturday

November 20th, 2009, 3:12 pm by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

180b39412The first group stage of the WBC Super Six World Boxing Classic concludes Saturday and it is up to Andre "S.O.G" Ward to avoid the American fighters from being shut out.

The tournament started in October with Andre Dirrell losing a split decision to Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham scoring a 12th round knockout of Jermain Taylor.

The final bout of Group I features Ward (20-0, 13 KOs) against WBA Super Middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (42-1, 32 KOs) Saturday night in Oracle Arena, in Ward's hometown Oakland, California.

Pac-Cotto draws 1.25M PPV buys

November 20th, 2009, 9:50 am by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

Manny Pacquiao underscored his box office magnetism when he and Miguel Cotto drew 1.25 million pay-per-view buys for their fight Saturday night.

That surpasses what Floyd Mayweather did in his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez in September.

It also sets up negotiations for Pacquiao-Mayweather, although the Golden Boy promoters will point out that Mayweather did more business when he fought Marquez than Pacquiao did against the same opponent.

Whatever the reason, we know that boxing, at least the big boxing events, is alive and well.

Poll: Who wins Pacquiao-Mayweather?

November 16th, 2009, 2:20 pm by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

Manny Pacquiao's victory over Miguel Cotto last Saturday set the stage for an incredible spectacle in 2010.

A Pacquiao showdown with unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. would settle the question of the world's best fighter. It also would undoubtedly set alltime gate and pay per view records.

Who wins? I admit I'm always biased toward the last fight I saw. I thought Mayweather would be favored. But then Pacquiao once again proves he has a knack for getting better.

I don't think The Pretty Boy has seen such a combination of speed, power and unorthodoxy. I'm going with the Pac-Man sometime between the 8th and 12th round.

But what do you think?

Cotto: The best must fight the best

November 16th, 2009, 2:05 pm by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

Here's a story from the Huffington Post, the site that so lavishly praised me two months ago. This trainer and professor nicely sums up the Pacquiao victory Saturday night and offers a warning from Cotto about what happens to a sport that turns away from its best matchups -- like Mayweather-Pacquiao.

Pacquiao overwhelms Cotto en route to 12th round TKO

November 14th, 2009, 6:46 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

pacquiao_champ_medLAS VEGAS --- Apparently, Manny Pacquiao can do whatever he wants.

He can make action movies, TV sitcoms and record CDs.

He can have the weight of an entire country on his shoulders every time he steps into the ring and remain unfazed.

Pacquiao re-affirmed his status as the best fighter pound-for-pound on the planet with an overwhelming 12th-round TKO victory over Miguel Cotto on Saturday night in front of 16,000 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Pacquiao claimed Cotto's WBO welterweight title with the victory, giving him world titles in five weight classes from 112-147 pounds.

FIGHTS OF THE WEEK: Pacquiao vs. Cotto, Couture vs. Vera

November 13th, 2009, 3:07 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

pacquiao_cotto_medMANNY PACQUIAO VS. MIGUEL COTTO

When: Saturday, 6 p.m.

Where: MGM Grand, Las Vegas

TV: HBO PPV

Outlook: Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) goes in search of world title in a fifth weight class when he challenges Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) for his WBO welterweight championship.

Prediction: This fight pits Pacquiao's speed against Cotto's strength. Cotto has dealt with speedy fighters before when he faced Sugar Shane Mosley and Zab Judah. Cotto also possesses one of the best left hooks to the body, which will help slow down Pacquiao. Cotto will use his excellent counterpunching to outpoint Pacquiao and win a hard-fought decision.

couture_vera_weighin_medUFC 105: COUTURE VS. VERA

When: Saturday

Where: M.E.N. Arena, Manchester, England

TV: Spike TV, 8 p.m. (tape delayed)

Outlook: Five-time UFC champion Randy Couture (16-10) moves back down to 205 pounds after back-to-back losses at heavyweight to Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to take on Brandon Vera (11-3).

Prediction: Couture, 46, keeps himself in peak condition and he continues to be able to compete wit the elite fighters of this era despite his age. Vera, 32, has a solid wrestling background, excellent Muay Thai skills and very good submissions. I believe Couture, who is one of the best game planners in MMA, will be able to control Vera in the clinch, get takedowns and pile up points with his ground-and-pound en route to a decision victory.

Record in 2009 picks: 28-14
