Ward stops Kessler for WBA title in Super Six

November 21st, 2009, 7:05 pm by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

ward_kessler_right_hook_medHere is my live blog during the Andre Ward-Mikkel Kessler fight in the Super Six World Boxing Classic. Ward entered the fight 20-0 with 13 KOs. Kessler carried a 42-1 record with 32 KOs.

IT IS ALL UP TO WARD

It is up to Andre Ward to get the American fighters in the "W" column. Andre Dirrell lost a decision to Carl Froch and Jermain Taylor got dropped by Arthur Abraham in the first two fights in the Super Six tournament. It is all up to Ward. Can he handle it.? He's fighting in his hometown of Oakland. Is Kessler ready for Oakland?

180b39412The first group stage of the WBC Super Six World Boxing Classic concludes Saturday and it is up to Andre "S.O.G" Ward to avoid the American fighters from being shut out.

The tournament started in October with Andre Dirrell losing a split decision to Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham scoring a 12th round knockout of Jermain Taylor.

The final bout of Group I features Ward (20-0, 13 KOs) against WBA Super Middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (42-1, 32 KOs) Saturday night in Oracle Arena, in Ward's hometown Oakland, California.

D.C.'s Night at the Fights

October 10th, 2009, 11:56 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

Damian Calhoun, a.k.a. D.C. the guest blogger, is back as a contributor to the Keep Punching blog to provide his unique take on Saturday night's fight card at Nokia Theatre.

Welcome to another edition of Night at the Fights, brought to you by me.

This week, we’re live at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live for the return of Israel Vazquez. It has been 19 months since he was last in action.

vazquez_marquezWe all remember Vazquez from his trilogy with Rafael Marquez. After all of the dust was settled from those fights, Vazquez had a detached retina in his right eye.

He is facing Angel Priolo in the main event that is set to get crackin’ sometime after 7 p.m.

I can always find something to complain about and this time, it is the parking prices in and around the Nokia Theatre. I dropped 25 big ones to park in the parking structure. That’s absurd.

dc_credentialMore importantly, I have a seat this time, unlike the time a couple of weeks ago for the Chris Arreola-Vitali Klitschko fight at Staples Center. You can’t hold me down.

4:43 p.m.

Mexico is close to securing a berth in the 2010 World Cup. El Tri is up 2-0 on El Salvador. I am so happy (note the sarcastic tone).

4:45 p.m.

I have no idea when this joint is supposed to start. I was told first fight started at 4:30 ... I guess that’s not going to happen. There are probably 35 people here.

4:49 p.m.

Where are the fighters?

4:54 p.m.

I see a mic. I think we’re getting close to some action. Attendance is now up to a whopping 55 people.

5:14 p.m.

The lights have been dimmed … and here comes our first combatants ...

D.C. on his night at the fights/home

September 27th, 2009, 1:19 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

fight002Damian Calhoun, a.k.a. D.C. the guest blogger, blogged about the Vitali Klitschko-Chris Arreola fight on Saturday night at Staples Center. Here is his report:

So you think you want to be a sports writer?

Well, sometimes, you have to deal with situations like this…

I had all intentions on attending Saturday night's Chris Arreola-Vitali Klitschko heavyweight title fight from Staples Center. I had my main man Carlos Arias include my name for a credential last week, I received the word that it was taken care of.

I made it to Staples Center at about 4 p.m. and was told that I didn’t have a credential. (This never happens at a Golden Boy event).

Fast forward ahead: It turned out that I did have a credential, but I didn’t have a seat in the ringside media section. In fact, they wanted me to sit in Section 115, which is a great seat if the Lakers were playing, but not so much if I had to sit there with my laptop on my lap and with fans standing up in my way.

lax-los-angeles-galaxy-soccer-sportsSo, I finally reached the conclusion that I wasn’t wanted, so I decided to head home. So, instead of watching the preliminary fights, I’m watching the Galaxy-Columbus in a very important MLS game.

I will bring you my insights on the Arreola-Klitschko fight once HBO goes live.

5:46 p.m.

Galaxy defense is struggling, just let in a second goal ... 2-0 Columbus.

la-dodgers5:54 p.m.

Now I’m watching the Dodgers. They’re struggling in the seventh inning. Pirates have the bases loaded with two outs. George Sherrill is on the mound and there is a two-out, two-run single for the Pirates.

6:09 p.m.

Back to boxing: Carlos Arias picked Arreola to win. I think Klitschko will pull out a victory. I didn’t think Arreola was ready for this shot right now. I could be wrong. We’ll see. Arreola appears the USA’s only legit hope for a heavyweight champ.

6:28 p.m.

Back to baseball: Dodgers have scored twice in the eighth and still have the bases loaded. Jim Thome comes up with a two-run, pinch-hit single. They’re on their way to clinching a playoff berth.

6:39 p.m.

Back to boxing ...

HBO will be going live soon

6:58 p.m.

And we’re live ...

mayweather_marquez_24747:01 p.m.

First up, the Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez replay. I already know how that story ends. The Arreola-Klitschko fight should start at around 8 or so.

7:05 p.m.

Did you know that the Mayweather-Marquez PPV generated more than a 1 million buys? I was one of them. Were you?

7:19 p.m.

Meanwhile, the replay is now in Round 4.

7:20 p.m.

Back in Staples, Javier Mora, is in the ring (Carlos Arias just tweeted). A couple of years ago, Mora was supposed to be the first Mexican-American heavyweight champion, but was never able to complete the deal. I should know, since I covered two of his fights: One was a second round knockout of Armando Rodriguez at the Irvine Marriott in May of 2004 and the other was a unanimous decision defeat to Fres Oquendo, in May of 2006.

Twitter heads make sure you follow Carlos @punchymcgee. Follow me @DamianCalhoun ... If you’re into that kind of stuff.

7:27 p.m.

This just in: Javier Mora loses a majority decision. Mayweather replay is in the 12th round.

sugar-shane-mosley7:53 p.m.

A Floyd Mayweather live interview. This should be fun. Funny moment: Mayweather clowned Sugar Shane Mosley for dodging him in 1999 and 2006, for a tooth ache.

8:02 p.m.

Who is Nikolay Valuev? HBO just put up the best American heavyweight hopefuls and yes, Arreola is our only hope.

acdc_jayz8:04 p.m.

Klitschko is 10 years older. Is 3 ½ inches taller, has a 3 ½ reach advantage. Here come the combatants. First up, Arreola to the sounds of Jay-Z. Now, here comes the champ: Klitschko, rocking to AC/DC.

8:17 p.m.

Sounds like the majority of Staples Center is rolling with Arreola.

8:22 p.m.

Let’s start the show!!!!

klitschko_right_handRound 1

Klitschko looks like a giant in the ring compared to Arreola. Arreola had trouble trying to find the right distance. He has to get in and attack. Klitschko dominated the first round, but he still looks awkward.

Round 2

This is a Nightmare so far for Arreola. He’s pressuring Klitschko, but he’s not landing anything of substance. Big right by Klitschko.

This doesn’t look good at all.

Round 3

There is always the hope that Klitschko will punch himself out. Arreola is chasing three rounds already. He’s taking too much punishment, it could be time to get that towel ready.

Round 4

Arreola appears to be getting closer. He’s showing some life, but appears to have lost another round. He did get in a good left hook. Can Klitschko keep up this pace of sticking and moving? And why is a heavyweight running as much as he is.

Round 5

Arreola just said that Klitschko runs a lot. Yes, he does.

Round 6

I’m glad this fight wasn’t on PPV. Will any heavyweight fight ever be on PPV again? Halfway through and it doesn’t look good for Arreola.

PunchZone says Arreola has taken 98 punches to the chin.

klitschko_postfightRound 7

There’s a Wladimir Klitschko sighting. He works in Vitali’s corner. So far, it has been an easy night. Does he get paid?  Arreola only threw 32 punches in that round.

Round 8

Arreola got in some good lefts, waking up his fans. He’s not quitting, but he is bleeding. Frustrating.

Round 9

Arreola’s face is taking a beating. His trainer just said he has to take some chances. Harold Lederman has given one round to Arreola. I’m not sure which one and I don’t think he knows either.

Round 10

We could be entering KO time.

Check that ... TKO time ... The fight has been stopped, mercifully. Arreola is crying in the ring. There’s no cryinig in boxing.  Klitschko threw 802 punches and he’s a heavyweight. How does that happen?

Final thoughts

Dr. Iron Fist needs to meet Dr. Steel Hammer. ASAP. They’re only two legit heavyweights and they need to fight. Brothers have fought before. My nephews fight all the time. Come one, Klitschkos, get it together.

Arreola should thank whoever stopped the fight. I know he’s deeply disappointed, but he has the talents to climb back up the ladder. Then again, as long as the two Ukranians are on the top rung maybe everybody should stay off the ladder.

Arreola is the clubhouse leader in postfight interviews. I haven’t heard that many F- bombs and MF-bombs in a long time.

Keep punching.

D.C. is back at the fights

June 28th, 2009, 3:54 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

ortiz_cutO.C. Register staff writer Damian Calhoun, a.k.a D.C. the guest blogger, was back to blog about the Victor Ortiz-Marcos Maidana card. D.C. is always up for free food and a spot on press row for the fights.

Welcome to another edition of my live (or not-so live) boxing blog.

This time I’m here at Staples Center for the Victor Ortiz-Marcos Maidana fight.

The last time I was here was in January when Shane Mosley laid a whooping on Antonio Margarito, plastered hands and all.

Ortiz is being billed as the next young superstar. He’s legit. However, Marcos Maidana is tough with 24 KO’s in 26 fights.

The doors have opened and the fans are starting to arrive. Carlos Arias hasn’t … maybe he’s waiting for his intro from Michael Buffer.

We need a camera focused on Harold Lederman

Harold Lederman is walking around, now he’s standing. Now he’s sitting. Now he’s up walking again. He just took a walk around the ring and now he’s back in his seat. It amazes me that with all of the shows HBO has come up with no one has ever thought of a day with Harold Lederman.

There are a lot of losses in the ring

First fight of the night has Sergio De La Torre against Jaime Orrantia in a junior middleweight fight. De La Torre is 11-11-2 and Orrantia is 11-23-4!!! They must do it for the love. Anyway, someone is getting that magical No. 12 victory.

Still stuck on No. 11

The horror…. This fight has been declared a majority draw. The fans are booing. The crowd gave Orrantia and De La Torre a good ovation as the final bell sounded. Orrantia suffered a nasty cut over his left eye (all cuts are nasty to me) in the fourth round. One judge had it 39-37 and the two other judges scored it 38-38. When’s the rematch?

5 p.m.

Where are the fans? Where’s Carlos?

There are a lot of empty seats here. Is this a Clippers game? The upper level of seats is empty. Even the majority of the floor seats to my left are empty. Meanwhile, the next pair of fighters has made it to the ring.

Cool Willie vs. The Problem

“Cool” Willie Kickett is set to meet Adrien “The Problem” Broner. These guys are winners. Kickett is 15-1, Broner is 9-0. Kickett is from Perth, Australia, Broner is from the ‘Nati. This is scheduled for eight rounds in the Lightweight Division.

Carlos has arrived

And he is sitting in the front row. That’s why he’s him and you’re you.

Shane Mosley TKOs Antonio Margarito to win WBA title

January 24th, 2009, 3:57 pm by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

Just when the boxing community may have been getting ready to count Shane Mosley out, he offered them his rebuttal.

Mosley, 37, who entered Saturday night’s WBA Welterweight title fight against Antonio Margarito as the underdog, dominated the fight from the beginning, pressuring Margarito with his superior quickness on his way to a ninth round TKO in front of a crowd of 20,820 at Staples Center.

The crowd, which was predominantly pro-Margarito, was the largest in Staples Center history.

Mosley of Pomona dropped Margarito late in the eighth round with a flurry of right hands. Margarito managed to beat referee Raul Caiz Sr.’s 10- count.

Mosley pressured Margarito to start the ninth, backing him against the ropes with several punches to head. Margarito’s corner was eventually forced to throw in the towel forty-three seconds into the round, stopping the fight.

Of the eighth round knockdown, Mosley’s trainer Nazim Richardson said that he didn’t think the fight was over ‘but I knew it was coming.’

Mosley improves to 46-5. Margarito falls to 37-6.

All three judges, Dr. James Jen Kin, Max Deluca and Nelson Vasquez, had Mosley ahead on their scorecards.

“I won the fight with my strategy and I stayed focused on my game plan,” Mosley said. “I had a good coach (Naazim Richardson), I knew it was a tough fight, but it was a great plan. It was my left hook …It was the same one that caught (Fernando) Vargas and Ricardo (Mayorga).

“He was very powerful, but he couldn’t resist my rhythm.”

The game plan that Mosley referred too was simple: keep the pressure up. That was something that Miguel Cotto didn’t do against Margarito in their fight July 26. Margarito won the fight by TKO in the 11th round.

“We exploited that his (Margarito) pressure could work against him,” Richardson said. “We turned his pressure against him and killed him with it.”

This was Mosley’s first fight with Richardson as his trainer. Mosley hired Richardson after he fired his father, Jack, in November.

“When you have a great game plan and excellent athlete, everything works out well,” Richardson said. “They said that he (Margarito) was the monster and we conquered the monster.”

Both fighters used the first round as a feeling out process, but Mosley started to settle in quickly and from that moment on, Margarito’s corner saw trouble signs ahead.

“The problems started right away in the first round,” Margarito’s trainer Javier Capatillo said. “It was too frustrating to watch.”

Mosley was able to get his punches off at will throughout the fight. Several times, Margarito smiled after Mosley tagged him with one of his perfectly placed left hook or right cross.

“I was just getting caught over and over,” Margarito said.

The CompuBox numbers tell the same story. Mosley landed 178 punches to Margarito’s 108. He also landed 118 power punches to Margarito’s 78.

The victory keeps Mosley’s name near the top of what is a crowded welterweight division.

He said that he’s ready for whatever is next.

“I’ve been asking for (Miguel) Cotto,” Mosley said. “But, I’ll fight anyone. …If they (Margarito-Cotto) want to fight again, then I’ll fight the winner, that’s fine.”

Mosley lost a close decision to Cotto in 2007.

I’m not ringside or press row-side … I’m couch-side

November 29th, 2008, 8:26 pm by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

That’s right this is D.C., the boxing blogger back to take you through another boxing card as seen through my eyes. I couldn’t make it to Ontario for the Paul Williams and Chris Arreola headlined-card at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, so I’m posted in my room in the mean streets of Compton.

The card is being televised live at 7, but shown on a delayed basis on one of the HBO’s at 10. I have a lot of HBO’s and I’m watching it live.

Get settled.

6:46 p.m

Touchdown Oklahoma. The Sooners just went ahead 21-13 against Oklahoma St. In other football news, Notre Dame is really, really bad. That’s all for now.

6:48 p.m.

I have one question, how does Ontario get a new arena? Or a new anything for that matter? I need answers. Promo for De La Hoya-Pacquiao just went off. De La Hoya is boring. The highlight of the show so far is Pacquiao’s crew that has to lose weight for $2,000 and Freddie Roach. In fact, Freddie Roach should have a camera following him at all times.

Cue the Boxing After Dark promo.

D.C. is ringside (sort of) for Darchinyan-Mijares

November 1st, 2008, 7:54 pm by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

Boxing in the rain, we're boxing in the rain. ...Or at least covering boxing in the rain. Here is my live account of the happenings from The Home Depot Center for the Cristian Mijares-Vic Darchinyan card.

Let's do it.

Rain and boxing ...what a great combination

Showtime World Championship Boxing has returned to lovely, sunny California. However, this is hardly the California I know.

The weather is cloudy here in Carson at The Home Depot Center and we're dealing with off and on heavy downpours that has forced Southern California boxing media up to the auxiliiary press box. The televised portion of the card will get underway at 6 with Andre Dirrell against Victor Oganov and the main event between Cristian Mijares and Vic Darchinyan. I just hope there will be some fans here to watch.

4:52 p.m.

The one and only M.M. is back

No, not that Eminem, although there are reports that Marshall Mathers is set to resurface with an upcoming album ...we'll see.

The MM of this day is Marshall Martinez of Fontana. To say that he's had a difficult past, would be an understatement. He recently did a four-year bid for conspiracy to sell cocaine. According to esteemed boxing press, he was once destined for greatness. Martinez just picked up an unanimous decision, 60-54 over Michael Lucero. Is he back?

D.C. is back at ringside for Mosley-Mayorga

September 28th, 2008, 12:39 am by CARLOS ARIAS

NOTE: Damian Calhoun, a.k.a. D.C. the guest blogger, is back to give the Keep Punching blog his take on the Sugar Shane Mosley-Ricardo Mayorga fight card on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. Check out how the night turned out for D.C.

I'm baaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!

After a three month hiatus and a bit of confusion at the credential will call (My name is Damian Calhoun and not Calhoun Damian, what a clown) I have finally found my way back home to The Home Depot Center. I used to cover the Galaxy for 4 ½ years, but…..well, let's not get into specifics.

Anyway, I'm at the HDC with boxing guru Carlos Arias in preparation for the Shane Mosley-Ricardo Mayorga and the Andre Berto-Steve Forbes co-feature.

If anybody drops, quits or cries, I will bring it to you live and in color. First of all, I have to find Harold Lederman.

Where's the love for Luis Collazo?

The guy is ranked No. 1in the WBC and WBA, but he's fighting at 4 p.m. What gives? In wrestling circles, today he's one of the curtain jerkers. That's amazing. By the way, Collazo (29-3) pounded Russell “Don't call me Michael” Jordan, stopping him in the eighth round.

Is Brooklyn in the house?

At least Daniel Jacobs is. He's a young and upcoming prospect in the Middleweight Division. Emmanuel Gonzalez is a brave soul. He's gone down twice inside of four rounds. He rallied strong in the fourth round.

Soccer or Boxing?

There are two events tonight at the HDC. This fight card is in the tennis stadium and a Chivas USA-Kansas City soccer game is in the main stadium. I wonder which event will draw the most fans. My money is on the fight. I have a hunch.

Marcy, son.

I don't know if Jacobs is from the same Marcy Projects as Jay-Z, but he just wrapped up the victory with a unanimous decision. Brooklyn is definitely in the house.

D.C. is back as the guest blogger for 'Affliction Banned'

July 20th, 2008, 12:40 am by CARLOS ARIAS

Tim Sylvia, left, and Fedor Emelianenko tussle during their fight on Saturday night. PHOTO BY DEREK HAMILTONNote: Damian Calhoun has covered just about everything for the O.C. Register. He made his second trip to an MMA event at "Affliction Banned." D.C. was last seen at the Honda Center for UFC 76. D.C. wasn't exactly ringside, but I can vouch for him that he was in the arena for "Affliction Banned" to give his take on on the event for the Keep Punching blog.

The world of MMA is colliding and I'm here to bring it to you. Carlos Arias has allowed me to tag along with him to the “Affliction Banned” MMA extravaganza from the Honda Center.

This is my second MMA show in person. I was here when Keith Jardine got it on with Chuck Liddell, a couple of months or years ago. Also on that card was Forrest Griffin. And we all know what he's been up to. I'm taking Griffin with the first pick for my MMA fantasy team.

I think there are 12 different cards being televised. We have this show, which needs a new name (I'm really not feeling Affliction Banned) show live from the Honda Center. UFC has a live card being shown on FREE TV (what a concept) opposite the Affliction show. I'm sure the MMA fans are pulling their hair out right now. As for me, I'm in full chill mode.

The Banned MMA show begins at 4, Fox Sports then kicks off the television coverage at 5 and then the PPV coverage kicks off at 6.

Where's Carlos?

He told me that he was going to be here by 3:30. I got here at 2:45. I hope he shows up. When he does, he will certainly have the better seat. I'm in sort of an auxiliary press area, which is behind a section of spectator seats right next to the steam machine. I hope the fans stay seated.

What's in a name?

Word on the street is that this show is being dubbed “The Greatest MMA Show of All-Time.” Check back with me when this party ends.

As far as nicknames go (and we all know how important those are) this card is stacked. We are scheduled to have the Grim Reaper, the Headhunter, the Phenom, the Last Emperor, the Maine-iac, the Pitbull, Big Ben, the Baby-Faced Assassin, the Rock, Babalu, Negao, The Law, Quicksand, the Machine, Minotoro and Babyface (not the singer).

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!

The first fight begins at 4:10. I'm not sure about the combatants. They could and should just pick two names out of a hat and send them out.

Let's start the show

The Headhunter (Paul Buentello) vs. Big Daddy (Gary Goodridge). These guys need new gigs. The Headhunter is 25-10 and Big Daddy is 23-17-1.

Fight? What fight?

The Headhunter is departing the ring. So is Big Daddy. So much for the 4:10 p.m. start. My MMA sources tell me that the much-anticipated battle between the Headhunter and Big Daddy will be postponed a couple of more minutes. It is now 4:24. I should have brought a pillow.
