joachim-hansen_shinya-aokiShinya Aoki and Joachim "Hellboy" Hansen split their first two fights and now they will meet in a rubber match to complete the trilogy at Dream 11 on Tuesday at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan.

'Cro Cop' leaves UFC, signs with DREAM

June 18th, 2009, 1:15 am by CARLOS ARIAS

cro_cop_mug1Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic has left the UFC to fight Siala "Mighty Mo" Siliga at DREAM 10 on July 20 in Saitama, Japan, Josh Gross of SI.com reported this morning.

Filipovic scored a questionable first-round TKO over Mustapha Al-Turk that was aided by an inadvertant eye poke on Saturday night at UFC 99 in Cologne, Germany. That night, UFC president Dana White confirmed to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports that Filipovic walked away from a two-fight extension with the UFC for a three-fight deal with DREAM.

"Isn't that a dirty (expletive) thing to do?" White told Iole. "He (expletived) me. The first time in the history of the company I do one (a contract) over the phone. He promised me a three-fight deal and he (expletived) me."

Filipovic was considered one of the top heavyweights in the world after he won Pride's 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix. Filipovic signed with the UFC in 2007 and went an unimpressive 1-2 in the octagon.

Filipovic called his first run in the UFC "the black spot" on his career during a conference call last week. He said he was looking to redeem himself and eventually fight for the UFC's title. On the same conference call, White confirmed he had signed Filipovic to a one-fight deal to get him on the UFC 99 card, but the plan was to extend the deal.

"I have nothing to hide or to be ashamed of," Cro Cop told the Croatian website Index.hr on Wednesday. "The thing is very simple. I know the truth and Dana knows the truth --- I had a one-fight deal with UFC and I fulfilled my contractual obligation. I said we're going to sit down and talk after UFC 99.

"The problem is I'm 35 and I'm finally healthy. The UFC is offering me a fight six months from now. I said even before that I want to fight three more times this year. I don't really care if it's in the ring or inside the octagon. I don't see why I can't fight in Japan for a few fights and then return to the UFC. That is also an option."

Yeah, what's wrong with that option?

DREAM 6 to crown Middleweight Grand Prix champion

September 22nd, 2008, 6:21 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

DREAM's 2008 Middleweight Grand Prix champion will be crowned at DREAM 6 on Wednesday at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The semifinals and finals will be held on the same night. The event will be televised live by HDNet on Wednesday at 12 a.m.

Brazilian Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (9-1), a two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu open weight world champion, takes on Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic-protege Zelg Galesic of Croatia in one semifinal.

Souza, who has won nine consecutive fights, advanced to the semifinals with a rear-naked choke to submit Ian Murphy in the first round of the tournament and a unanimous decision over former Icon Sport middleweight champion Jason "Mayhem" Miller in the quarterfinals.

Galesic (9-3) needed just 2 minutes and 45 seconds to dispatch his two opponents. Galesic submitted Magomed Sultanakhmedov with an armbar, then annihilated Taiei Kin in 65 seconds in the quarterfinals.

In the other semifinal, explosive striker Melvin Manhoef (22-4-1) of Holland goes up against fast-rising Armenian Gegard Mousasi (22-2-1).

Manhoef showed off his awesome striking power in both of his victories, stopping Dae Won Kim with knees and punches before dismantling Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba in 91 seconds.

Mousasi scored the biggest upset of the tournament when he upset tournament-favorite Denis Kang with a triangle choke in the opening round. He advanced to the semifinals with a unanimous decision over Dong Sik Yoon.

Yoon (4-5) will fight Andrews Nakahara (0-1) in the Middleweight Grand Prix reserve bout in the event that any of the semifinalists is injured and unable to continue.

Croatian Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, who was PRIDE's 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix winner, and Alistair Overeem of Holland highlight the non-tournament bouts with their heavyweight grudge match.

Russian Sergei Kharitonov (15-3) was supposed to fight Siala "Mighty Mo" Siliga, but Siliga pulled out of the fight due to a back injury. Jimmy Ambriz (13-9-1) of Huntington Beach will step in to face Kharitonov as Siliga's replacement.
