Taylor fires off verbal shots on Abraham

October 15th, 2009, 1:54 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

taylor_abrahamJermain Taylor today dismissed Arthur Abraham's talents at a packed press conference at the o2 World Arena in Berlin. More than 14,000 fans will be in attendance when the two former champions open the Super Six World Boxing Classic in Germany´s capital on Saturday night (Showtime, 8 p.m., tape delayed).

Taylor added fuel to the fire today when he publicly questioned his opponent's class. Asked how he would rank Abraham, he replied: "There is nothing special about him. He has some power and I know he will be prepared to do battle, (but he is) just a normal fighter. I would not rank him at the top with some of the other fighters I have fought."

Abraham refused to return the verbal jab. "He can say what he likes. I am sure he will have a different opinion once I have caught him for the first time. I really look forward to Saturday. This is a special fight, the first of many big fights in the Super Six tournament. I am ready and prepared and cannot wait to get in the ring with Taylor."

Here are all the quotes from Wednesday's press conference:

JERMAIN TAYLOR

"I have been in Berlin for about a week and a lot of people have come up to me on the street and let me know they will be cheering for me. I don't think he is going to have 50,000 people hoping he wins. There a lot who want him to lose. I don't think that everybody likes him."

"I'm ready to do battle and win by any means necessary. Every fighter has to be ready to do battle and go to war. I'm expecting a war and I'm prepared for it."

"Whoever wins this tournament I think would have to be considered the best Super Middleweight. You have six very talented Super Middleweights and I don't see how the winner could not be seen as the best."

ARTHUR ABRAHAM

"I want to be a star in America and the Super Six tournament will help me to accomplish my goals. I am thrilled to get started."

"I have been a happy man each and every day because I don´t have to make weight any more. For me that used to be the biggest problem - much bigger than the actual fight. But since I don´t have to lose much weight this time, I am very relaxed, happy and in a great mood."

"We will find out on Saturday in what shape Taylor will be like. There are no favorites in this tournament. There are six great fighters. They will all be in great shape and we can only tell afterwards who the favorite was."

LOU DIBELLA

(To Abraham directly) "Please don't mistake our confidence for disrespect. We know you are a very strong fighter. More importantly, we know that you have incredible heart. It's that heart that makes you a great champion."

"We also know that in Jermain Taylor, we bring to Berlin a great champion with tremendous heart and determination. It is Jermain's heart as a fighter that will carry him to victory on Saturday night."

WILFRIED SAUERLAND

"This historic tournament will revolutionize boxing. We are thrilled to stage the first fight of the Super Six. Abraham and Taylor are two great champions who will please the crowd with a spectacular fight."

"Arthur has been in great shape and he is very happy that he does not have to lose much weight any more. He is excited to get in the ring knowing that a sell-out crowd in his home city of Berlin will support him. We are looking forward to Saturday."

ULLI WEGNER

"We have had a great training camp. We went to a small island in the Baltic Sea so that Arthur could get away from all the frenzy in Berlin. He is ready to move up in weight. Taylor is a great fighter, a true champion, but Arthur will find a way to beat him.

"It is our duty to win the fight here in our city. We owe that to our fans. And we have big plans for America afterwards."

Rothwell ready to make impact in UFC

October 15th, 2009, 1:32 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

ben_rothwell_med"Big" Ben Rothwell has paid his dues to get to where he is, and he plans on being around for a long time.

Rothwell is jumping right into the mix in the UFC's ultra-competitive heavyweight division when he makes his UFC debut against Cain Velasquez at UFC 104 on Oct. 24 at Staples Center.

"My objective all along was to come into the UFC as a somebody and then make my name and finish my career there," Rothwell said. "And the only way you can finish your career there is if you win fights and you make a name for yourself. Obviously, I’ve done something right because they put me on the poster and made me a co-main event. And I don’t think it just happens just because. I think it’s because the guys that matter have been watching me and they know who I am and they know what I can do and that’s why they gave me this opportunity and I plan on being around for a while."

Rothwell, a veteran of 36 fights, gained notoriety during his run with the now-defunct International Fight League.

"Yes, the organization you know was a good thing for a minute, I think, for up-and-coming fighters," Rothwell said. "You can’t put a price tag on experience. There was just a lot of things that were wrong and they really started to overuse me and overuse fighters. And like I said, they amount of fights I was trying to pump out for those guys, you know, it wasn’t going to stop. If they would have had it their way I would have 18 fights in 2 years you know what I mean? It was just getting ridiculous that way."

Velasquez is considered on of the rising prospects in the UFC. Rothwell, who was originally slated to fight Chase Gormely at "Affliction: Trilogy" before that card and organization fell apart, could make an immediate impact in the UFC with a victory over Velasquez.

"As respect to Cain, I feel great about the fight because I was going to fight a guy that nobody had heard of, you know, and that’s not a guy – that doesn’t mean the guy is not tough." Rothwell said. "It just means that’s a fight that you’ve got everything to lose and really not much to gain. Well, fighting Cain, everybody knows who he is. I want to be fighting with the guys that are the names in the UFC. You know I want to be a name in the UFC as well and that’s the only way. You’ve got to be in there fighting the guys that people know. So I’m very excited for the fight."

Ward, Kessler advance to Super Six World Boxing Classic

September 13th, 2009, 12:11 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

ward_pudwill1WBA super-middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward took care of business, dispatching their tuneup opponents on a special edition of "ShoBox: The New Generation" on Saturday night on Showtime.

Ward will meet Kessler in the opening stage of the Super Six World Boxing Classic on Nov. 21 at Oracle Arena in Oakland on Showtime.

Ward (20-, 13 KOs) remained undefeated, stopping Shelby Pudwill (22-4-1, 9 KOs) at 2:16 of the third round at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula.

“I knew it was over after I knocked him down,” Ward said. “There was no use continuing. Once I saw the blood the fight was over.”

Earlier in the day, Kessler (42-1, 32 KOs) retained his WBA 168-pound title with a fifth-round TKO over Gusmyr Perdomo (16-3, 10 KOs) at MCH Messecenter in Denmark.

“He came out strong in the first couple of rounds,” Kessler said. “I couldn’t figure him out so I made a plan in the third to go forward and put pressure on him and that worked.

“I am looking forward to the Super Six (World Boxing Classic). It’s a dream come true for us all. Ward is a great fighter. I have deep respect for him. He’s a tough guy and a nice guy also. I met him. I think we are going to have a hard fight. I am going to show him I am the best. I am the world champ.”

Andre Ward uncut with all the extras

September 3rd, 2009, 6:29 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

oak_0100I couldn't fit everything 2004 Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward had to say in my article that ran in Thursday's O.C. Register, but I can get all the extras right here on the Keep Punching blog.

Ward fights Shelby Pudwill on Sept. 12 at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula on Showtime before taking on WBA super-middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler in the opening round of the Super Six World Boxing Classic on Nov. 21 on Showtime.

Here's what S.O.G. had to say:

On the Super Six World Boxing Classic:

"Basically the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament is six of the best super-middleweight fighters in the world. You have two contenders, myself and Andre Dirrell. You have a former world champion in Jermain Taylor who is trying to regain championship status. He is very hungry to get back to the top. You have a middleweight champion in Arthur Abraham, who vacated his title to move up. I think he only has one loss on his record. You have reigning world champion Mikkel Kessler with only one loss on his record to the long-time champion Joe Calzaghe. He's the favorite in this tournament and he's my first opponent in the first round. And then you have Carl Froch, a young, hungry guy, who doesn't believe he can be beat, and he's also a WBC world champion.

"So this is a power-packed lineup and there's really no weak links in this tournament. Everybody is coming in here to win. The intriguing thing about this tournament is no one can  really pick a true winner. Everyone can have their opinion, but the talent is so stacked it's hard to really pick a clear-cut winner."

On this being such a unique tournament in boxing:

"This is unprecedented. This has never been done before. The closest anything like this has been done before was when Don King, I don't remember what year it was, but it was a four-man tournament with Bernard Hopkins, Felix Trinidad, Keith Holmes and William Joppy. The big differance was that was single elimination. These guys only had two fights. One fight to get to the final. Bernard Hopkins and Tito Trinidad ended up meeting in the final, and Bernard Hopkins beat Trinidad to unify all the belts.

"This is totally different in the sense that there is no single elimination. Each fighter is guaranteed three fights, win, lose or draw. And it's based on a points system. If you get a knockout, you get three points in any of those three fights. If you get a regular decision, you get two points. If you get a draw, you get one point. Obviously, for a loss you get no points. At the end of each fighters' three fights, we'll tally up the points and we'll see the top four guys and that will determine the semifinals and the finals. This has never been done before."

On his next fight against Shelby Pudwill on Sept. 12 at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula on Showtime:

"My next fight is against Shelby Pudwill, but the will do a split feed to pump me and Kessler. He's going to be fighting (Gusmyl Perdomo) the same night. I believe they are going to show his fight closed circuit in the arena. I don't know if it's before or after my fight. The fans are going to get a chance to see Andre Ward and Mikkel Kessler in their last fight before the big fight on Nov. 21. It's a little appetizer to wet the whistle a little bit and get them excited about our fight. It's a great idea. It really is."

On Kessler's style and abilities:

"He's got good speed. He's very determined. He's a strong fighter. He's 41-1 with 31 knockouts. I mean, the only guy I know that he's fought on his record is Joe Calzaghe. I'm not taking away anything from his other victories because he is the reigning champion. After he lost to Joe Calzaghe he came right back to win another championship. He's the real deal, but I believe that I'm going to be better than him Nov. 21. That's what it boils down to. I'm taking nothing away from him. He is on paper the best guy in this tournament. He is the top guy. This is the guy we wanted to go after and we got him in the first round just the way I wanted it."

On how the first round fights were determined:

"I have no idea. I don't know how the draw went. I wasn't privy to that. The bottom line is this, I feel like every fighter in this tournament should feel like they are going to be the last man standing. So, that being said, my mindset is such to where I'm willing to fight anybody. It really doesn't matter to me who I fight first. I don't look at it like give me Froch because he is a tad bit easier than Kessler. I'm ready for Kessler. I'm ready for Abraham. I'm ready for all the top guys. I feel like I'm the best in this tournament. You have to think like that. We all have an opportunity over the next three fights, over the next two years, to prove it. In my heart, I feel like I'm the best. That being said, I'm willing to fight any of the guys in the first round. It really doesn't matter to me."

On actually stepping up and being willing to fight anybody:

"There can be a lot of reasons. Boxing has changed in the sense that it's not as simple as me just saying, 'Hey, I want to fight this guy.' You have separate promoters that may or may not get along. You have networks that are involved. One guy might be a Showtime fighter and the other guy might be an HBO fighter. Money is a big factor these days, as it should be. You know, guys feel like they're not getting the right compensation. There's just a lot of factors involved.

"I don't blame it all on the fighters because you have to understand this is prizefighting not pride fighting. I say that to say if I take some damage in the ring physically, I can't reverse that. And nobody, none of the fans --- I appreciate the fans and love the fans --- nobody is going to go home with these fighters. Fighters have to make sure if I'm going to take this risk that I'm getting ample reward. Sometimes that halts a big fight from happening. But in this case we're all in one pot, so there is not much wiggle room. We gotta go at each other and at the end of the day see who is the last man standing.

"That's going to be a process. It's not going to be overnight. It's going to take I believe two years to get the whole tournament completed, at least 18 months to get these first three fights completed. The goal for me is to take it one fight at a time, one opponent at a time. I'm locked in right now against Pudwell on Sept. 12 because he is in the way of me fighting for a world title. And then Kessler Nov. 21. Those are the only two guys on my mind."
