Diaz vs. Trejo on Oct. 31 on Telefutura

October 14th, 2008, 4:09 pm by CARLOS ARIAS
JULIO DIAZ

JULIO DIAZ

Former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz of Palm Springs will celebrate Halloween night inside the ring when he takes on Fernando Trejo of Jarrell, Tex., in Telefutura's "Solo Boxeo" main event on Oct. 31 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Diaz (35-4, 26 KOs) lost a lightweight unification fight to Juan Diaz a year ago and bounced back with a fifth-round TKO victory over David Torres on June 25 at The Playboy Mansion.

"I think I belong with the best in the lightweight division," Diaz said. "My fight against Juan (Diaz) wasn't the real Julio. You'll see the real Julio on Halloween night."

Trejo (30-14-4, 18 KOs) is a battle-tested veteran with a solid chin, but he has lost his past two fights to Anthony Peterson and Bobby Pacquiao.

"Trejo is an experienced fighter," Diaz said. "Young, undefeated fighters don't want a piece of me because they know what will happen. Trejo, on the other hand, isn't afraid. He will come out swinging."

Escobedo stops Salcido in sixth round

September 27th, 2008, 12:50 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

Vicente Escobedo, a 2004 U.S. Olympian, scored an impressive sixth-round KO over Dominic Salcido of Rialto in a matchup of lightweight prospects on Telefutura's "Solo Boxeo" on Friday night at Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon.

Escobedo (19-1, 12 KOs) hurt Salcido (16-1, 8 KOs) with a big left hook and dropped him with a brutal barrage of punches in the sixth round. Salcido got back up, so Escobedo kept dishing out the punishment until the bout was stopped at 42 seconds of the sixth round.

Super-bantamweight Nestor Rocha (20-1, 7 KOs) dropped Javier Cintron (14-11-2, 10 KOs) twice before stopping him at 124 of the second round.

Super-featherweight Charles Huerta ran his record to 8-0 with a spectacular first-round KO over Efrain Perez (2-3, 2 KOs). It was Huerta's fourth kayo victory.

Mayoga goes after Mosley

September 24th, 2008, 6:45 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

Nicaraguan brawler Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga began Wednesday's final news conference by thanking God.

Then he launched into a verbal barrage against Sugar Shane Mosley, questioning his manhood with a string of profanity and racial slurs.

Mayorga, 34, known for lighting cigarettes and pounding beers in the ring to celebrate his victories, promised to a deliver a beating that will send Mosley, 37, into retirement when they meet Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at The Home Depot Center.

“I've seen all the reports about how much of a man he is and how he's not afraid to stand and fight. I want to see how true those stories are,” Mayorga scoffed.

“If he comes to run, I want him to let me know. That way I can bring rollerblades and I will give him the pink outfit like I promised him last press conference.”

Mayorga (29-6-1, 23 KOs) also challenged Oscar De La Hoya to a rematch, saying: “How can he retire fighting a featherweight?”

Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) called Mayorga a comedian and reminded him that he knocked out Fernando Vargas twice while Mayorga labored to a majority decision over Vargas.

“That's the difference,” Mosley told Mayorga. “Remember that when you get into the ring with me and you want to go toe-to-toe. You said that toe-to-toe thing with Vargas.

“Let's stand toe-to-toe and fight. Remember that you don't run. You sit there and take it like a man.”

HOTBEDS

Mosley-Mayorga is the big fight of the week, but it isn't the only major fight card going on in So Cal this week.

Here is a look at the big fight cards going on in Southern California this week:

Paul Williams (34-1, 25 KOs) vs. Andy Kolle (17-1, 12 KOs) and Chris Arreola (24-0, 21 KOs) vs. Israel Garcia (19-1, 11 KOs), tonight, at Soboba Casino in San Jacinto (Versus, 6 p.m.): Williams, the WBO 147-pound champion, moves up to 160 pounds for this fight. Arreola might be the top U.S. heavyweight prospect.

Bernabe Concepcion (26-1-1, 15 KOs) vs. Giovanni Caro (11-4-4, 9 KOs), tonight, at Sycuan Casino and Resort in El Cajon: Who will be the next big thing to come out of the Philippines? Many are banking on Concepcion, who is managed by Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.

Vicente Escobedo vs. Dominic Salcido, Friday, at Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon (Telefutura, 8 p.m.): Salcido has moved his way up the rankings fighting on club shows throughout Southern California, and he gets a huge opportunity against Escobedo, a 2004 U.S. Olympian.

Escobedo showed why his trainer Nacho Beristain and Golden Boy Promotions think so highly of him with a 10-round unanimous decision over rugged veteran Roberto Arrieta in the main event of Telefutura's "Solo Boxeo" card on Friday night at the Home Depot Center.

Arrieta had his moments early in the fight when he landed some damaging left hooks to the body, but Escobedo turned the fight around when dropped Arrieta with a right hand in the sixth round.

It was all Escobedo from the seventh round on as he used his left jab to bloody Arrieta's nose and damage his right eye.

RING NOTES: Andrade shores up defense

PHOTO COURTESY OF PAUL HERNANDEZ/PUNCHNEWSBELL – USBA super-middleweight champion Librado Andrade of La Habra doesn't like to watch a lot of video tape of his opponents or come up with a specific plan.

“Plans always go wrong,” Andrade said after a workout at Azteca Gym on Wednesday morning. “Instinct never goes wrong. Instinct is always reliable. So, yeah, I go by instinct.”

Andrade grew up sparring with his younger brother, Enriquez Ornelas, a talented middleweight, and former WBO light-heavyweight champion Julio Gonzalez at the La Habra Boxing Club. It was there during those brutal workouts that he learned to be prepared for anything when going into a fight.

"Let's see what he really has," Walker said. "I feel I am ready to step up against top-10 contenders, but I know I have to win this one first. There is a big target on my back. It will be a big plus for anybody if they beat me. So there's no way I'll overlook anybody. I've fought two left-handers in a row, so that will not be a problem."

Wilson believes he is being overlooked by Walker.
