Pac-Cotto draws 1.25M PPV buys

November 20th, 2009, 9:50 am by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

Manny Pacquiao underscored his box office magnetism when he and Miguel Cotto drew 1.25 million pay-per-view buys for their fight Saturday night.

That surpasses what Floyd Mayweather did in his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez in September.

It also sets up negotiations for Pacquiao-Mayweather, although the Golden Boy promoters will point out that Mayweather did more business when he fought Marquez than Pacquiao did against the same opponent.

Whatever the reason, we know that boxing, at least the big boxing events, is alive and well.

Arum ambivalent about PacMan-Floyd

November 18th, 2009, 9:50 am by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

Bob Arum, the chairman of Top Rank and the promoter of Manny Pacquiao, tells Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports that his heart might not really be in a Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight. But his wallet is.

Pacquiao overwhelms Cotto en route to 12th round TKO

November 14th, 2009, 6:46 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

pacquiao_champ_medLAS VEGAS --- Apparently, Manny Pacquiao can do whatever he wants.

He can make action movies, TV sitcoms and record CDs.

He can have the weight of an entire country on his shoulders every time he steps into the ring and remain unfazed.

Pacquiao re-affirmed his status as the best fighter pound-for-pound on the planet with an overwhelming 12th-round TKO victory over Miguel Cotto on Saturday night in front of 16,000 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Pacquiao claimed Cotto's WBO welterweight title with the victory, giving him world titles in five weight classes from 112-147 pounds.

FIGHTS OF THE WEEK: Pacquiao vs. Cotto, Couture vs. Vera

November 13th, 2009, 3:07 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

pacquiao_cotto_medMANNY PACQUIAO VS. MIGUEL COTTO

When: Saturday, 6 p.m.

Where: MGM Grand, Las Vegas

TV: HBO PPV

Outlook: Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) goes in search of world title in a fifth weight class when he challenges Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) for his WBO welterweight championship.

Prediction: This fight pits Pacquiao's speed against Cotto's strength. Cotto has dealt with speedy fighters before when he faced Sugar Shane Mosley and Zab Judah. Cotto also possesses one of the best left hooks to the body, which will help slow down Pacquiao. Cotto will use his excellent counterpunching to outpoint Pacquiao and win a hard-fought decision.

couture_vera_weighin_medUFC 105: COUTURE VS. VERA

When: Saturday

Where: M.E.N. Arena, Manchester, England

TV: Spike TV, 8 p.m. (tape delayed)

Outlook: Five-time UFC champion Randy Couture (16-10) moves back down to 205 pounds after back-to-back losses at heavyweight to Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to take on Brandon Vera (11-3).

Prediction: Couture, 46, keeps himself in peak condition and he continues to be able to compete wit the elite fighters of this era despite his age. Vera, 32, has a solid wrestling background, excellent Muay Thai skills and very good submissions. I believe Couture, who is one of the best game planners in MMA, will be able to control Vera in the clinch, get takedowns and pile up points with his ground-and-pound en route to a decision victory.

Record in 2009 picks: 28-14

Five reasons to watch 'Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Firepower'

November 12th, 2009, 5:02 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

manny_pacquiao_upper_medHere are five reasons why you should shell out $44.95 to check out the showdown between pound-for-pound kingpin Manny Pacquiao and WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto on Saturday night at 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on HBO PPV:

1. It's a chance to see Pac Man in action: Not only is Pacquiao the reigning pound-for-pound king of boxing, but he is also one of the most exciting fighters in all of combat sports. He never disappoints. He always delivers. He has never heard of a boring fight let alone participate in one.

Pacquiao has an all-action style and he is constantly in pursuit of a knockout. He is aggressive, relentless and capable of scoring a knockout with either fist from the first round to the last.

Why would you want to miss one of the greatest fighters of this era whenever he steps in the ring? That's exactly the point. You don't want to miss any of Manny's fights.

Freddie Roach's mind games (video)

November 10th, 2009, 1:57 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

pacquiao-la-media-mits-roach_medHall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has become a master manipulator in recent years.

Whether its his predictions, which have been freakishly correct more often than not, or the subtle jabs and digs at his fighters' opponents, Roach has managed to give his fighters an edge in the weeks leading up to their fights.

Roach has been at it again, taking shots at Miguel Cotto and Cotto's new trainer, Joe Santiago, in the build up to Manny Pacquiao's showdown against the Puerto Rican sensation on Saturday at the MGM Grand in las Vegas on HBO PPV.

Here's what Roach had to say last week at Pacquiao's media day at Wild Card Gym:

Media day with Miguel Cotto (video)

November 9th, 2009, 2:16 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

cotto_media_day_medWBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto dropped into L.A. last week for a workout at LB4LB Gym. Cotto puts his title on the line against pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on HBO PPV.

Here's what the Puerto Rican sensation had to say:

On all the talk about a potential Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight:

"I don't know what's on his mind, but once I beat him he can fight Floyd Mayweather all the times he wants."

On Pacquiao's last two fights against Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya:

"Manny has the things he has today because he earned them. Nobody give to him. He beat Ricky Hatton. He beat Oscar De La Hoya. But he is going to face Miguel Cotto now. Nothing compares to his last two fights. Because I'm not Oscar De La Hoya. Oscar, to me, was a great boxer, but Manny chose the right time to face him in the last part of his career. Everybody knows Hatton doesn't have good defense.  Manny proved that on the night of the fight."

Arum weighs in on Pacquiao-Cotto (video)

November 3rd, 2009, 5:28 pm by CARLOS ARIAS

lb4lb_gym_smlLOS ANGELES --- Manny Pacquiao challenges WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto in one of the most highly-anticipated fights of the year on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on HBO PPV.

Cotto held an open workout on Tuesday afternoon at LB4LB Boxing Gym. Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, who is promoting the fight, was at the workout and took some time out to talk about the fight. As usual Arum had plenty of opinions and took some verbal shots at Oscar De La Hoya and MMA while pumping up Pacquiao-Cotto.

Here's what Arum had to say:

On how Pacquiao-Cotto is generating the same kind of heat as some of De La Hoya's biggest fights.

"Forget De La Hoya. This is the biggest fight since the great days of Las Vegas, of Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Duran. This is truly a mega-fight because it's so competitive and people really don't know who is going to win this fight."

On this fight being a tossup:

"I have no idea (who is going to win) and I'm close to both of these guys and I really truly have no idea about who is going to win the fight."

On the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Juan Manuel Marquez fight doing one million PPV buys and whether Pacquiao-Cotto can duplicate that success:

"I would hope it generates more heat because Mayweather-Marquez did tremendous numbers and it wasn't considered to be a competitive fight. This fight, everybody knows, is a competitive fight."
